Variables in PowerFX Command Buttons
Introduction
Have you ever wondered if you can use Environment Variables in a PowerFX button, how to create a custom email link button in the command bar of your Power Apps model-driven application using environment variables and Power FX? Luckily, Power Apps has made it possible to achieve this. With the help of Power FX, which is the same language used in canvas app development, anyone can efficiently customise their app’s command bar without needing prior knowledge of JavaScript or the Ribbon Workbench.
In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the steps involved in customising the command bar of your Power Apps model-driven app. You’ll learn how to use environment variables to create a button that dynamically generates email links. Assumptions
- You are in a Dataverse environment.
- You are in a solution.
- You have a model-driven app already in that solution.
- You have a table you would like to email records on.
Create environment variables
Navigate to your solution, select All and then from the menu at the top, select New, then choose More > Environment variable.
Then, fill in the details of our new environment variable. We will use these values later.
For my example, I created three environment variables, all relating to the email we will send.
Command Bar Customisation
Navigate to your Model Driven App
Within your solution, navigate to the model-driven app, and open it up in edit mode.
Navigate to the command bar editor
Find the table you which to add the custom command to, and then click on the ellipsis (three dots), then choose Edit command bar.
You will then be asked which command bar you wish to edit, choose Main grid.
Create your new button
Choose New, and then select Command
This will place an object called NewCommand on the command bar. You can drag this to any position you want.
With the command selected choose, you will see on the Right-Hand side of the screen a number of options available for you to select.
For this demonstration, I am using the following values
- Label: Email Record
- Icon: Use Icon, Email
- Action: Run formula (at this point, if you have not already you will be asked to create a component library)
- Visibility: Show on condition form formula
- Tooltip title: Clone record(s)
- Tooltip description: This button clones all of the selected records
- Accessibility text: Press this button to clone selected records
Enable Environment Variables in the Component Library
Save and Publish your changes so far.
Then we need to move to the component library.
Then you will be presented with a screen vert similar to one used for canvas apps.
From this screen you need to press on Add data and then add both Environment Variable Definitions and Environment Variable Values tables from Dataverse.
Configure our new button
In the top left-hand corner, you will see a drop-down box; this allows you to select either Visible or OnSelect.
With Visible chosen, copy and paste the following code:
// This is going to show the button as soon as an item is selected.

This command is essentially verifying that there are items currently selected. If any items are selected, the result will be true, indicating that the list of selected items is not empty. Conversely, if no items are selected, the result will be false, signifying that the list is empty.
With OnSelect chosen, copy and paste the following code:

Now that we have finished our component, press on Save and Publish
Then navigate back to your Model Driven App, and Play the app
Once it opens, press Ctrl + F5 to refresh your browser. Then you should see the Clone Record button in the command bar at the top of the screen.
